Focus on the Give, Not the Get

To be successful in life and business it makes sense to look at other successful people and find out what they’ve done to get there. While some successful people don’t want to share their secrets, there are plenty of others who do.

Tony Robbins, for example, is a well known motivational speaker and believes that “the secret to living is giving”. He claims that the day he became wealthy was the day he gave the last few dollars he had to his name to a little boy so he could treat his mother to lunch. This seems counterintuitive, but if you watch his video you’ll understand how and why he pinpoints that day as the one when he became wealthy.

So what does this have to do with you and your real estate business? Plenty! Let me explain.

I recently had the opportunity to watch Katie Clancy, a top producing real estate agent in Cape Cod, speak at an industry conference and her story not only resonated with me but also supports what Tony Robbins preaches. She firmly believes that the most successful people are also the biggest givers, which is why she incorporated this idea into her real estate business.

An interesting marketing opportunity presented itself when she and a bartender at a neighborhood restaurant came up with a specialty cocktail and named it after her brokerage. How cool is that?! But she didn’t stop there. For Katie, It wasn’t about just getting her name out there. She wanted to use this as an opportunity to give back to the community, so for a limited time, if you purchased the drink and posted it on social media with a specific hashtag, she would donate $5 to a local non-profit. This served not only as a unique branding experience but also got clients engaged with her brand and ultimately connected her brokerage with a good cause.

Moral of the story is focus more on the “give” and less on the “get”. The “get” will come to you eventually when you put more thought and effort into what you can do for others.
