What Dan and Greg Did Over the Christmas Break.

We’ve got a big announcement to share with everyone, something we are very excited about. We are launching a new product this upcoming weekend. That in itself wouldn’t be a surprise, we’ve announced a new product every year since W&R Studios was formed. The interesting thing about this new product is it’s not real estate related.

For many years now we’ve wanted to expand our product set beyond real estate. But we wanted to stay within the same category of clientele. We define that category as “micro businesses”. Smaller than “small business”, often these types of business are labeled as “mom and pop shops”, independent contractors (Realtors!), freelancers, or solo-entrepreneurs. According to recent U.S. Census data there are now more than 20 million single-person based businesses, accounting for more than three-fourths of all U.S. businesses.

When you dive into what type of businesses these are, you start seeing trends. Many of are these micro-businesses rely of generating income from a recurring client list. These are personal trainers, chiropractors, massage therapists, and hair stylists.

Hair stylists are a perfect example of a micro-business, and they share a lot in common with Realtors. First off they have to receive a license from the state to practice, many of them are independent contractors, they work at a salon (similar to a Broker office), and they rent a chair (think desk fee). A few key differences, they do more transactions (of course) and on average hair stylists make more money than a Realtor.

Also like a Realtor they depend on repeat business and referrals. But since a person gets a hair cut a lot more often than they buy a house, keeping their clients coming back and gaining new clients can have an immediate effect on their business.

Our new product is called “Heads Up!”. SImply put, Heads Up! is a reminder service targeted to micro-businesses who rely upon recurring customers. Using Heads Up!, hair stylists and other independent business people can easily schedule simple email or text message reminders to clients. These reminders may be to come in for a new appointment, or to alert a customer that an already scheduled appointment is nearing. The web app can be completely driven by just sending a text or e-mail from a mobile phone.

The concept behind Heads Up! is what we call ‘The 13th Month’. That means by getting their existing clients to come in more often and by turning a “walk-in” to a “welcome back,” hair stylists will be able to generate an additional month of revenue each year.

This weekend in Long Beach, CA, about 10 miles from our office, will the the largest hairdresser show in the country, the International Salon & Spa Expo (ISSE). They expect over 20,000. That would make it larger than N.A.R.’s annual expo for the past few years. We have a booth, we have a pitch to make and we have a product to sell.

This doesn’t mean we won’t be creating new apps or are less passionate for real estate. Every day a home buyer uses Dwellicious to help them find a home and everyday work on expanding the coverage of Cloud CMA to as many MLS providers as quickly as we can. Plus just like Dwellicious was the inspiration for Cloud CMA I’m sure Heads Up! will also be an inspiration for a new product (of this I am positive).

This is just an itch, and we’re scratching it.

Anyway, we just wanted to give you a heads up. : )
